We Are Here To Help End Violence In Women’s Lives

Nelson House is dedicated to providing all persons who identify as women and their children shelter, support and information so they can take steps towards ending violence in their lives.

Nelson House is a 15-bed emergency shelter with 11 private bedrooms.

We provide a home for the women and their children – who stay with us for approximately three months – until we find appropriate housing for them. During their stay, we provide them with all the necessities they might need (new bedding, clothes, school supplies, toiletries, baby supplies, prescriptions not covered by OHIP, loaded Presto cards, and anything else they might need).

In addition to shelter clients, we support women and children through our Transitional Support Program in the community. The shelter’s Transitional Support Program clients have access to counselling services and programs.

The Crisis line answers more than 1000 calls annually, responding to the needs of women in crisis by providing support and information on safety planning, access to community services, and advocating for women to find a safe place to stay.

We provide a range of holistic services to our shelter and Transitional Support Program clients. Our services and programs include 24-hour crisis assistance, individual and group-based counselling support, children and youth support programs, skills exchange programs, as well as legal, housing, and immigration support and advocacy.

If Nelson House is not able to provide housing or a needed service, we are able to help clients access other community services. When the shelter is filled to capacity, Nelson House turns to its network of sister agencies such as Interval House, Chrysalis House, Maison D’Amitie, Minawaashin Lodge and/or its partners such as Immigrant & Visible Minority Women Against Abuse, to assist a woman in crisis. No woman or child is ever turned away, though due to the acute shortage of beds, women are sometimes sent out of town.

 Our Programs and Services include:

  • 24-hour safe shelter, crisis helpline;

  • Supportive counselling for moms and children;

  • Safety planning;

  • Meals, clothing and personal necessities;
